About! and Welcome!

December 1, 2008

I am not going to start this blog with Hello World! I have done this many times and noticed that a lot of people has done it as well.

First of all, WELCOME! and Thank you very much for visiting or following Caribbean Open Source. As the name suggests, “Open Source for the Open Minded”, it seeks to target Open Source or Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) rather to be something that a user needs to be open minded about. Now, there are many people who feel that Open Source is just lousy marketing and does not make business sense. Many companies have divulged into looking for solutions that aren’t open source because of the fact that software “created for free” just does sound proper, it feel like its cheap, weak and untested. Most people rather look for a solution

Open Source by definition does not necessarily means that the software or material is “Free of cost”. It means that the users have the liberty of assess, analyse, improve (among other freedoms) the software or materials given. This means that for the very company that is scared to invest into Open Source can actually collect a piece of Open Source material and work on improving it to suit their needs. This means, of course, investing in your IT resources.

This aim of this blog is to:

  • Explain and Defend the concepts of Free and Open Source
  • To make new and existing Open-Sourcers in the Caribbean aware of the concepts, issues of Open Source
  • To list organisations and activities surrounding Free and Open Source in the Caribbean
  • To work towards bringing awareness about FOSS in the region
  • To explain from time to time matter about the uses of Open Source Software
